Spout Cave Water
Spout Cave Water
We are planning heading to Tafelberg middle March.
Does anybody know about the water situation at Spout Cave?
Although there was good rain in the Cedarberg during December, we're a little concerned.

Re: Spout Cave Water
Kevin is heading up there this weekend, he'll be able to tell you/us.
Re: Spout Cave Water
we're also heading to Tafelberg this weekend. would be good to know the water situation.
Since I started climbing I developed a big crack addiction.
Re: Spout Cave Water
Those planning a trip to Tafelberg:
Reconsider.
Both the Spout drip and the Scout stream are bone dry.
Welbedacht stream is only so-so.
We were told the opposite shortly before, so I suspect a serious sandbag....

Re: Spout Cave Water
Not to even mention the fire raging between Krakadouw and Sneeukop.
It may have reached the platuae at the foot of Tafelberg by now.
Visiters have been warned to not even visit the Arch.

Yea, that fire looked REALLY bad! Any further news on that!? They get it contained!?Hann wrote:Not to even mention the fire raging between Krakadouw and Sneeukop.
So sad to see that amount of smoke comming from the heart of the Berg!
Re: Spout Cave Water
Anyone been up Tafelberg recently? Is there water?
Re: Spout Cave Water
Planning to go around 10 March, any one been there lately? Would like to know the water situation.
You may still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not. Cat Stevens
Re: Spout Cave Water
FYI: I was last there on weekend of the 19th Feb - Spout drip was dry....
There was still lots of water near Welwedagt, but thats a heavy carry.
After rains you may get lucky with water in the cistern on top or pools.

Spout Cave Water
Has anyone been to Spout cave in the past 1-2 weeks? Is the waterpoint on the Spout full at the moment, or is it necessary to carry up from below?
thanks,
Ray

Heading up to spout cave this weekend. Any chance that anyone has been there recently and knows the water situation?

Anyone been up this past weekend and how was the water situation?
Re: Spout Cave Water
No water at the drip. There is some, but very little water on top. I would not risk it as there were a lot of people there over this last weekend.

Re: Spout Cave Water
I'm guessing that the answer is A) no, no one knows and B) it is highly unlikely as the Cape has had very little rain in the last few months. Nearest water will probably be somewhere near towards the bottom of Welbedacht Kloof.
Happy climbing

Anyone been to Tafelberg recently and know what the water situation at Spout Cave is?
Also, could the water infrastructure use an upgrade? I have a 25l water drum that I can take up when we go next week.

Morning Nic. The drip wasn't dripping, but there was still a lot of water in the little pool. I think you guys will be fine this weekend.

Re: Spout Cave Water
Thanks, that's good to know. Should I bother to take a 25l drum up to leave in the cave, or would that be frowned upon as littering?

Re: Spout Cave Water
I guess the concern would be that if everyone just added their left-over water to a plastic drum when they left, it might get manky and stale pretty fast?
Re: Spout Cave Water
Taking the most awesome water you have ever tasted and putting it in plastic seems defeatist.

Hey Nic
As Proze said, there's no drip - just very slow seepage. The cistern was about 70% full when we left. I would not bank on enough water for a large group; if there's just a few of you, you should be fine.

Re: Spout Cave Water
So if it doesn't rain much in the next while, the water situation up there would be even worse at the end of April. Is May usually a good time of year to go up there?

Re: Spout Cave Water
If it's rained then sure, otherwise the the nearest water is going to be below Welbedagtch (sp?) cave.
It will be COLD in May.

Anyone been up there recently? I saw there was some rain the last week of March. At least 25mm according to SA Weather Service data.

It's obviously not necessarily accurate, but this is the only online data I could find showing rainfall history in SA.
Re: Spout Cave Water
This will give you a better idea of the water situation. Official monthly rainfall totals.Jarrett wrote:http://www.weathersa.co.za/climate/historical-rain-mapsmokganjetsi wrote:can you pls post the link to this?Jarrett wrote: At least 25mm according to SA Weather Service data.
