Hi Folks,
Notice for the slideshow on 6th February 2018
Mulanje exposé with Martin Kleynhans
The Short:
Over a three year period of work contracts in Malawi, Martin got to explore many of the 60 peaks you can climb on the Mulanje Massif. He will share his extensive knowledge of how to get the best out of trip to this island in the African sky.
The Long:
The Mulanje Massif must be one of the most underrated mountains in Southern Africa, and perhaps the world. Located in the south east corner of Malawi, not much further from Johannesburg than Cape Town and only 1 hour's drive from Blantyre this 3000 m high mountain rises dramatically out of the African plains to its cool heights like an island in the sky. Mulanje has a network of good trails,10 huts and a list of over 60 peaks to climb of which numerous are higher than 2500 m. The peaks are never boring, usually involving exciting rock scrambling and intricate route finding, and the mountain is also home to possibly the highest rock face and longest rock climb in Africa on the west face of Chambe Peak. Martin was lucky enough to work in Malawi over a 3 year period, joined the Mountain Club of Malawi and spent numerous weekends exploring Mulanje. With new reciprocal arrangements between the MCSA and the Mountain Club of Malawi it is now possible to access the club stores in all the huts, and with a new map and guidebook just published, cheap porters and guides (if desired), it is now easier than ever to spend long periods exploring this amazing mountain. Come listen to Martin give the lowdown on his adventures, the best peaks to climb, access and more.
