Surfside Access

Post by GingerNinja » Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:33 pm

Hey guys

Anyone know the current access arrangements or lack there-of for Surfside at Gordon's bay?
Went there this afternoon to check it out and a Dept of Water employee driving up the hill told us climbing isn't allowed and asked us to leave. They seemed pretty jacked up because the guy driving the next truck up the hill a few minutes later (while we were fetching draws) also knew that there were climbers on the loose and stopped to make sure we were packing up.

There wasn't much chalk around so I'm guessing the place doesn't see much action anymore.

Search the archives for Surfside and/ or Gordons Bay

This will give you the history and history being repeated.

This is also why the ARF declined to issue bolts when asked a while back.

Be safe

Cheers
Cormac

Thanks
I thought seeing as the place has been re-bolted in the not-too-distant past that maybe access arrangements had been made.
Apparently not

The Person who agreed access/re-bolting unfortunately no longer works at Dept of Water. With him leaving the privilege to climb there again also departed. There was never going to be any formal/written agreement. We were lucky we could re-bolt when we did. Even then we had to do some heavy name dropping at times and adhere to precautions outlined (I think) in the latest Western Cape Rock guide book.

My advise would be to try and make friends with the new guy :thumleft:
