CT - General crag safety overview

Post by garethza » Wed Nov 27, 2019 11:17 am

Hi all,

Will be down in december with my girlfriend hoping to get out on some nice sunny routes, having moved to scotland its going to be quite a (temperature) change!

As its been 3 years since i was last there, just want an update on general crag safety, are the following places still alright or are there any no goes due to safety issues?

Higgovale Quarry
Lakeside Pinnacle
Silvermine
The Mine
Paarl Rock

Or I guess an easier question - is there any i should avoid?

Cheers!

Hey we're regularly going to Silvermine, Lakeside and I've never had any issues at Paarl.
There have been issues reported about the parking at Lakeside Pinnacle but I never had any issues (maybe because I drive a super old Hilux!)

We're all hoping that safety improves all around but always good to be on the lookout :)
Cheers
Gerhard

Hey Gareth

My 2c when rating safety as very safe / safe / moderately safe / unsafe:
Higgovale Quarry - moderately safe (some of the rock is a bit dodgy though)
Lakeside Pinnacle - safe; but as per Gerhard parking your vehicle on Boyes drive makes it a target
Silvermine - very safe (no incidences at crags to date)
The Mine - safe; parking your vehicle at a safe spot is advised
Paarl Rock - very safe (to my knowledge)

Not on your list but Peers Cave is best avoided unless going in a group; as is Skoorsteenkop. If you head out for some trad, both Table Mountain and Lion's Head can be considered safe.
