What happened to Snapdragon ??!

Post by RandomFrenchGuy »

Last weekend at Superbowl, on the way to my project Penny Royal Tee, I gave my usual glance of facination to Snap. I noticed some strange ropes hanging on it... Surprise ! As I looked up it seems that every hold on SA's most famous sport climb disappeared ! Can anyone explain this ??

Seems like somebody took the effort to clean the route for the first time in decades :thumleft: ?

Whomever took the time and effort, we need more people like you in the community!

What everyone should be wondering is what technique did these anonymous knights use? How long did it take? Did they just use water? How much water? Pressurized? Was it easy? How much did you have to scrub? How many people were involved? What tools did you use? Tell us more! :thumleft:

Ah yes.. on 15 August 2020 nearly three decades after being opened, Snapdragon had a major clean. While working the route, Robin and Aymeric both commented on the lack of texture on the majority of the holds.. basically refilling their chalk bags as they went up. So after they nabbed their ascents we took to the task of deep cleaning the route.
Armed with three squirty bottles (Two filled with plain water, the other with a 1:5 vinegar water mixture), an arsenal of brushes and a towel. We started from the top: water first then vinegar mix followed by the rinser. It took about 3 hours for our first path. We hit bottom refilled our supplies and went down again spending a total of 6 hours being mesmerized by rock, water and chalk. For the last pass the order went: Vinegar, water followed by more water.. this way removing any traces of the vinegar mix (even though it should evaporate with the chalk).
Wes had the honors of taking the first ride up the spick and span Snapdragon. Rediscovering the beta and leaving a trail of white in his wake.

I would be interested to know if this kind of scrub love has ever been done before. It's worth realizing that as climbers we "consume" rock, by making it dirty and eventually unclimable. So the current perspective is exploring new rocks, and sure there is more to explore, but what next ? Rock is a limited supply, so I believe this kind of practice is to become common in the future, if we want to keep on climbing rocks.

Amazing job! Well done for putting the time in.

Is it really regarded as SA's most famous sport route?
