2021 Mayhem Mountain Festival
Date: 2 - 5 April
Location: Waterval Boven – Mayhem Crag.
The Mayhem awaits…
The feeling of walking in the sky, being in total control of your mind and body, while dancing in the wind is a feeling that only a few people know and can appreciate. It is a surreal feeling to traverse the sky, surrounded in a sea of green, blue and orange as you work your way across the line in the sky. That is the privilege of the Skywalker. You are invited to become one of these rare Skywalkers, at the Mayhem Mountain Festival!
After the success of 2019’s Mayhem Mountain Festival, and the rough hand all the outdoor people were dealt last year, it would be a shame to let all the psych for highlining, climbing and all things flow go unappreciated in 2021. For this reason, it is a pleasure to announce that your favourite sort of Mayhem will be revived over this Easter weekend.
The crag will be brought to life by highliners, climbers and the casual observer out to flow, crush or spend time with their friends. The festival will offer countless slacklines, and promises between 6 -7 highlines! The festival is rigged for people of all skill levels, from never having been on a slackline, right up to people casually sending monster lines that traverse the gulfs of Mayhem crag. The orange faces that make up Mayhem seduce climbers from the moment they set eyes on the orange quartz crags; allowing climbers and highliners a brief moment to share the same hallowed air space with each other. Everyone can appreciate and ease with which all this adventure can be reached, as the Mayhem campsite is only 100m away from where all the action is taking place. This makes for easy and lazy access to activities that usually require a hectic walk-in. The Mayhem campsite is the perfect place to transform your land walking into flying with all the sick camplines as well as the beautiful dam offering superb waterlines off of which to practice your bails into crystal clear mountain water.
Accommodation:
Mayhem Mountain Adventures:
The Mayhem Mountain Festival is hosted at and by the Mayhem Mountain Adventures campsite. This is a campsite that has been birthed by the people in the highlining community for the purpose of establishing and growing the sport of highlining in the North of the country. If you are serious about the notion of highlining and would like to be involved in the atmosphere and psych of the Mayhem Mountain Festival, I would recommend that make a booking for the weekend at the Mayhem Mountain Adventure campsite. The main advantage of this campsite is that you are super close to the action, and is a real treat for a lazy hiker. The campsite is equipped with ablutions, hot showers a communal cooking space, refrigeration and periodic electricity for communal charging purposes.
Booking is essential, as space is limited to 50 campers, and can be done through the Friends and Allies Climbing Gym, who have volunteered their facilities admin services to the fest. All of the money will go to Keenen and Oom Ruben, the owners of the campsite and the farm who will look to grow the camp even more.
Cost for camping:
• R100 per-person, per night.
For booking:
There are 3 ways to get in touch with FA to make a booking:
1. Send an Instagram DM to @friendsandallies_climb.
2. Contact them via email on wes@friendsandallies.co.za
3. Give them a call on +27 (0) 66 506 0828
All bookings are payable with EFT or at the FA counter.
If you want to find out more about the Mayhem Campsite, phone Keenen on 072 439 1550.
Tranquilitas Adventure Farm:
This is an established campsite, and it is recommended that people who want all their needs catered for call in at the Tranquilitas campsite. This campsite is a good 20 – 30 min walk from the Mayhem crag, and it is recommended that you stay here if you wish to just 'check out the lines’ somewhere over the long weekend, while you have other adventure priorities to attend to. The long weekend can get quite busy so booking a spot in the Chalets and Perma tents is essential and can be done through - http://tranquilitas.com/
Due to recent criminal activity in the area, both these campsites have done their utmost to ensure that their guests are protected. If you feel unsure about the security arrangements, please do not hesitate to make contact with the owners of either campsite to discuss what security measures will be in place at the campsites over the long weekend.
Permits:
Due to the permit system currently in place at Boven, and the fact that this event is being held using Oribeni Farm facilities, day visitors from Tranquilitas will have to pay R50 for a day permit, or R120 for a weekend permit. This will be payable at the Mayhem Mountain Adventure Campsite.
The same applies to visitors staying at the Mayhem Mountain Adventure Campsite who wish to go to the Tranquilitas camp over the weekend. Permits need to be acquired from the Tranquilitas camp, and are payable at reception. Day permits R60, and day permits for MCSA R30. Weekend permits R100, Weekend permits for MCSA R50.
How to get there:
If you are driving from Gauteng get onto the N4 Highway until you reach a town called Machadodorp/eNtokozweni take the off-ramp into the town. This route is to avoid the R100 Tollgate just before you hit Waterval Boven. Once in Machadodorp/eNtokozweni take the 4th left onto the R541. Follow the R541 for about 13km until you come to the first opportunity to make a left turn, there is a sign that says ‘Slaaihoek’. Follow this road for 3km, drive slowly or you might miss the ‘Waterval Boven’ sign, turn left into the dirt road. This dirt road is maintained by Sappi so it should be ok, even for city cars. Take it easy though. Follow the dirt road for about 6.5km. You will come to a fork in the road. If you are staying at the Mayhem Mountain lodge turn right and follow the signs to the campground. If you are staying at Tranquilitas Adventure Farm keep left and you will eventually see the signs indicating the campground on the right-hand side of the road.
Alternatively, you can just use Google Maps, or a similar app, and search for either ‘Mayhem Mountain Adventures’ or ‘Tranquilitas Adventure Farm’, and your friendly phone will navigate you there without any hassle.

• Plenty of psych! It is not every day you get to fly in the sky!
Until we all meet in the void, and walk the sky together.
Swart.

Re: 2021 Mayhem Mountain Festival
A last little bit of waiting left... The psych is real and the froth is forming.
Please come and join the Joburg slackline community this weekend to build up a last bit of confidence for the highlines.
We will be rigging at Delta Park on Friday and Sunday Afternoon. Have a look at the Friends and Allies Social Media channels for more specific info.
Can't wait to share the air with you all!
