Sling Jams Micro Traxion, Sending Climber into 30-foot Groundfall --> https://www.climbing.com/news/top-rope- ... -accident/

Hey, Buddy, check your climbing buddy! ALWAYS
A climber is lucky to have survived a 15m ground fall, sustaining "only" leg fractures after he started a rock climbing route, unknowingly not having properly tied into the climbing rope and then falling unprotected by the rope. The accident happened on 5 December at The Mine, a steeply overhanging sports rock climbing crag on the cliffs above Muizenberg. As part of a WSAR team, SARZA and MSAR rescuers rushed to the scene, placed the climber in a stretcher and, with the help of several other climbers and EMS paramedics, wheeled the climber on a stretcher down a 1.5km path to an awaiting ambulance.
This climber lived to tell the tale... Full story on MCSA Facebook page

I've not read the full article but the correct method of doing it is to climb on two lines, the one being a backup, with a 2nd device.

Cheers,

Dear,

Thanks for sharing this important reminder. It's a stark example of the critical need for thorough safety checks in climbing. Always double-check your gear and your partner's setup. Glad to hear the climber survived and kudos to the rescue teams.

Stay safe out there!

Best,Nick

On the sling jamming a micro traction, I have had this happen a few times. So can make some an additional recommendations

1. Yes, absolutely, use a back up device, but if that backup device is connected with a very skinny sling, then that can be what jams the traction. So while I'm all for skinny, lightweight gear, in this particular case connecting the second device to you is best with a wider, standard sling or daisy chain etc

2. Thin clothing can also jam a micro traction, like loose T shirt. So tuck things in.

3. If you are gonna use a micro traction, best practice unjamming one in a safe environment. It's fairly easy to do provided you don't panic.

Lastly, on topic of rope ascenders. If using a jumar, always clip a biner through the top holes and rope so you don't accidently disconnect it. Thats another way to have an accident on a fixed line...
One life, one body. Use them well.

Thanks Q20.
On jumaring, be sure to connect both jumars to your person (backup onto both).

Photos from The Mine accident --> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... 4rj7rFam-S
All good/happy photos. The video of the actual fall may be sensitive for some.

As always, big up to the rescue for being there (most are volunteers).
