Let me cut to the chase. I would like to work overseas for a year or three. I would like to ask for suggestions from you guys.
Some info about me:
I am 24 years old and I just finished my undergrad in electronic engineering and my master’s in engineering management. I am currently working as a data analyst (very exciting (not really)). I don’t have anything holding me in South Africa at the moment. Eventually, I would like to come back but right now I want to go on an adventure!
What I am looking for:
ANYTHING!
Well maybe not anything but I am open to almost anything. I would like to go somewhere cool. Some examples include:
Kenya
St Helena island
Patagonia
Chech republic
Antarctica
you get the point (I just want an adventure)
I don’t really care how much money I make but it would be nice if it could at least pay for my flight ticket there and back. I also don’t want to cut into my savings. So if I can come back with the same amount of money that I left with I would be happy.
Some Jobs I was thinking of include:
Volunteer work
Something offshore
Waitering
Mountain guide
Tree felling
The point is, I don’t necessarily have to be doing anything involving engineering.
My CV (in short):
Bachelor’s in electronic engineering
Masters in engineering management (Did my project on intermodal transport road-to-rail)
Currently working as a data analyst for an American-based international company where I collaborate with people from Germany, the USA, South Africa, and the UK.
My mountain CV:
Have done 10+ five-day hikes
Sport climbing
Abseiling/kloofing
Highlining
Scuba diving
Freediving
Surfing
3-gun shooting
Hunting
Snow skiing
Trail running
I also love working with people and animals (sorry plants, you’re not that cool).
Please let me know if you have any rad suggestions or experiences that you would like to share!
Cheers!
Work/travel suggestions
Re: Work/travel suggestions
some of my 2-cents
What does SA not have in abundance?
Very high mountains/cliffs, snow, ice, consistently warm water, jungle (but you don't like plants), historical cities... That's where/what you want to play/experience, if that's your aim
Consider that for where you want to go. e.g. think of skiing/snowboarding for a few seasons back-back (or ice-climbing or surfing in Indonesia etc etc).
For work; if you aren't tied to your career, then look for preferably high-paying, seasonal work possibly in the developed world (to maximise earnings) and then travel in the off-season. The less-pleasant, more-dangerous work you do, should enable you to travel more easily. Aside from the usual ones like offshore work (O&G
, fishing = very tough, not necessarily that pleasant), i've heard of people planting saplings in Canada or selling xmas trees in California - plants again
... guiding in Antarctica ... working on Survivor Fiji set for 4-6 months. There's a lot out there, you just gotta find it - partly luck, partly just putting yourself out there! And even just working in a wealthy country/city will give you enough money to travel for quite a long time in some places... If you like the work try to build relationships so you can keep going back to the same job but equally don't get bogged down if you want to experience lots of different places.
In the end, you just gotta GO FOR IT!

Re: Work/travel suggestions
I want to meet a girl here and go traveling with her. Is that possible? Are there any singles here?)
Absolutely, meeting someone to share adventures and travel with is totally possible! It’s all about connecting with like-minded people who share your interests and are open to new experiences. Traveling together can create incredible memories and deepen bonds, making it such a rewarding way to explore both the world and a relationship. In today’s world, online dating is a modern way to meet, aligning with changing social norms and lifestyles. It’s practical, relevant, and opens doors to connections that might not happen otherwise. Platforms like milfs in my area can help you find someone who shares your enthusiasm for travel and adventure. Good luck on your journey—both in life and love!

Re: Work/travel suggestions
If you are interested in going to Antarctica you could apply to work at SANAE (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SANAE).
Unfortunately, the best link I could find is https://www.facebook.com/AntarcticLegac ... 093361590/ I don't think this includes the science jobs which is probably what you should apply for.
Alternatively find the academic teams that work at SANAE for example: https://natural-sciences.nwu.ac.za/spac ... c-research
Your electronic engineering degree would be helpful.
Give me a PM if you want to try this and I could try search for some more people to contact.
