The Clanwilliam Cedar needs your vote

Post by justin »

The Clanwilliam Cedar needs your vote.

This rare, knobbly, quietly majestic tree has been hanging on in the rocky cliffs of the Cederberg for millennia. But it's now critically endangered — not just from old logging scars, but from intense fires, seed-eating critters, and the slow creep of climate change.

Thankfully, there’s a small but mighty team ready to do something about it.

Sustainable Ceder has a plan:
🌱 Build a nursery to grow Clanwilliam cedar saplings
🌳 Replant them in places they have the best chance of thriving
🎓 and roll out 30 hands-on learning events that invite schools, local guides, and communities to rediscover the cultural and ecological importance of the cedar — and why its survival matters.

They’ve been shortlisted for a €30,000 grant from the EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association — but here’s the twist: the winner is decided by public vote!

That’s where you come in.

If you’ve ever hiked the Cederberg, or just love the idea of a tree making a comeback, please take 1 minute to vote:

1. Go to https://lnkd.in/d6SBxKaN
2. Scroll to the Wild Places category
3. Vote for "Reviving the Critically Endangered Clanwilliam Cedar"
4. Send it to your aunt & uncle so it says "forwarded many times"

Voting closes on 14 April. Let’s give the Clanwilliam cedar a fighting chance.
Because once it's gone… well, it’s gone.

I've just voted - easy and fast :alien:

Reviving the Critically Endangered Clanwilliam Cedar, South Africa

Website: sustainableceder.org/

The Clanwilliam cedar is confined to an area of approximately 250 km2, at an altitude between 800 and 1,500 meters above sea level, in rocky sandstone terrain and holds historical and cultural significance for the people and communities of the Cederberg mountains. Numbers of Clanwilliam cedar declined historically due to logging, and are now threatened due to high fire frequency and intensity, low recruitment rate, seed predation, and climate change. Funding will be used by Sustainable Ceder to establish a nursery to propagate and grow a large number of Clanwilliam cedar saplings. These will be strategically planted in the most ideal locations within the natural range of the species to ensure the successful growth and survival of the saplings. In addition, 30 awareness raising and environmental education events will be held to increase interest in the Clanwilliam cedar, the Cederberg, and its species.
