Royal Natal safety currently?

Post by AdrianT »

Good Day,

Does anyone know what the safety situation is currently at Royal Natal - on top of the escarpment, that is. I remember in previous years we had problems with the chaps from Lesotho coming around and cutting open tents and scaling stuff while you're peacefully asleep. One of my mates had his boots stolen in winter. Bad times walking in snow with Strops. :?

Any current info would be hugely appreciated as I'm planning on heading there soon for the R&R.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi

I suggest also posting on vertical endeavor, they run a few threads related to berg security.

As VaughnC says - VE is the best place for such a question.

But in summary, don't camp in the Tugela drainage basin - push through the valley and over the ridge on the other side (the Bilanjil ridge named after a couple name, Bill and Jill, who camped there once). I camped just above the Bilanjil river on the Easter weekend and had no issues at all - saw a few horses in the morning, but no locals. We did only get to our camping spot at 7:30PM though - that walk from RNNP to the top is really tough to do in a day.

Thanks! Yes I've camped twice next to the Bilanjil River. Just before it disappears over the edge is a nice little pool to swim in, just below a 4 metre waterfall. So and check it out next time.

Strange, I did not receive any e-mails for the replies from this thread but had ticked the instant notification button...
