Jim's Crag, Olifantshoek

Trad Climbing Area near Buffelskloof Dam, Sabie, Mpumalanga, South Africa. DIRECTIONS

   From Lydenburg, take the R540 towards Dullstroom.
   Drive 4Km then turn right at the R577 to Roosenekal.
   After 18Km turn right to Sekhukhune.
   After 20Km and over the Waterval river bridge turn right onto a dirt road to Wildebeeskraal.
   Travel on this road for 11.3Km; keeping right at a fork, passing the dam on the right below and up thehill onto the top of the range.
   After the crest of the hill, where the road flattens out onto a plateau, take the first right turn onto a dirttrack that goes up between two fences. Follow the dirt track up from the main dirt road and where the track forks go left up to a gate. Continue through the gate following the left track to Jim′s Kraal.

   NOTE: It is suggested that vehicles with low ground clearance do not attempt the dirt road on the last section of the trip up to Jim’s, although this has been done on occasion.

   PARKING

   Secure parking at the kraal or at the radio mast has been arranged with the kraal headman, for a small fee.

   CAMPING

   Following the great tradition of MCSA camping there is a great site to camp at the top of the crag near the radio mast. There is no water, ablution facilities or braai places on this site. So please enjoy this outdoor experience as it was meant to be.
   Remember to leave the site as you found it and take care with open fires.

   A softer alternative to the bush camping at the crag is also available at the Buffelskloof Dam Resort. Take the right turn to Buffelskloof Dam before the Wildebeeskraal turn off and drive down the dirt road to the resort. This resort is about 13Km from Jim’s Crag.

The cliffs at Olifantshoek are broken down into three main sections:

Jim’s Crag is the southern most part of the Olifantshoek cliffs and is directly below Jim’s Kraal. It is divided into smaller buttresses. The crag here is smaller and less intimidating than the others are. It does have some big overhangs though. Olifantshoek Buttress is the main buttress seen from the road and immediately below the radio mast North of Jim’s Kraal. Here is some scary stuff.

Cow crag is the cliff to the North of Olifantshoek Buttress and Tyred Cow Gully.
